Nnamdi Kanu Re-arraigned on Terrorism Charges, Apologizes in Court

- 22 March 2025

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was re-arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on fresh terrorism charges.

This marks a new chapter in his long-standing legal battle, after Justice Binta Nyako stepped down from overseeing his case due to claims of bias.

Kanu faces a seven-count charge relating to terrorism, following his initial arraignment back in 2015.

During the court proceedings, Kanu pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him by the federal government.

His lead defense counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, confirmed that the defense was ready for trial, and the court adjourned the case until April 29, 2025, for a full trial.

The charges stem from Kanu’s leadership of the IPOB, which advocates for the secession of the southeastern region of Nigeria.

“I hereby apologise to Justice Binta Nyako. She did not deserve the unjust attack,” Kanu stated in a formal apology, delivered by Agabi.

Kanu also expressed regret for his past conduct in the courtroom, which had included public outbursts against both the court and prosecutor Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN.

“I appeal for forgiveness. Kanu is a good man, but all of us cannot be of one mind. He is not perfect, but defending the cause of Igbo people,” Agabi added on his behalf.

Chief Awomolo, who is prosecuting the case, responded to the apology, saying, “I was moved by the plea and have forgiven Kanu for all he said against me.”

The case continues to draw attention, with implications for national security and regional tensions in Nigeria.
