The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has overtaken the United States as Europe’s largest supplier of imported jet fuel for the second consecutive month.

The refinery delivered more than 400,000 metric tonnes of jet fuel to Europe in July, accounting for about 20% of the continent’s total imports, according to data compiled by commodities intelligence firm Kpler.

Europe imported about 2.06 million tonnes of jet fuel in July, with Dangote supplying the largest share ahead of the United States and Middle Eastern producers.

The latest performance follows a record 466,000 tonnes exported to Europe in June, when Nigeria first displaced the U.S. as the region’s leading supplier.

Dangote said the figures showed its growing ability to compete in one of the world’s most demanding fuel markets.

“The sustained export performance marks a significant milestone for the refinery,” the company said, adding that its aviation fuel meets “stringent international quality specifications.”

The refinery said its location on Nigeria’s Atlantic coast, combined with its scale and modern technology, has helped it become an increasingly important supplier to European markets.

The development comes amid disruptions in global energy markets, including uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz, which has encouraged European buyers to diversify their sources of jet fuel.

David Bird, chief executive officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, said the refinery had also increased exports of diesel, gasoline and other refined products.

“Beyond aviation fuel, the refinery has continued to expand exports of diesel, gasoline and other refined petroleum products,” Bird said.

He said the development was “further strengthening Nigeria’s position as a net exporter of high-value petroleum products.”
