Oyo State Gov. Seyi Makinde has inaugurated a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area on 16th May 2026.

The commission will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the events that followed, after the victims were held for several weeks before regaining their freedom in July.

Makinde had earlier called for an independent investigation by the United Nations and international human rights organisations, saying the circumstances of the incident were “sufficiently grave and unusual to warrant independent scrutiny beyond our domestic institutions.”

The governor also called on international bodies to “closely examine the facts surrounding this abduction and the circumstances of its resolution.”

The call came after the rescued pupils and teachers returned home.

The Presidency had announced their release on 10th July 2026, ending weeks of uncertainty over their safety.

The state government said the new commission is expected to provide answers about what happened before, during and after the abduction and help identify measures to prevent a similar incident.

The panel’s work comes amid continued concern over security around schools and communities in the state.

Makinde has said security is a shared responsibility and urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies.

The inquiry is also expected to help clarify issues surrounding the handling of the incident, including the circumstances that led to the abduction and its eventual resolution.

The governor has maintained that the investigation is aimed at establishing the facts and strengthening accountability and security in Oyo State.
