The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has announced plans to investigate the controversial death of Kelechi, a 39-year-old Nigerian man from Awka North in Anambra State, who reportedly died following a violent encounter with police officers in Lausanne, Switzerland.
A disturbing video, now viral on X (formerly Twitter), shows the moment Kelechi was forcefully pinned to the ground by a Swiss police officer while he screamed in pain, repeatedly crying, “You’re hurting me.”
Social media has since erupted in outrage, with several users calling for justice. One user, @ChuksEricE, who shared the video, alleged that Kelechi died shortly after the incident. Another, Somto Okonkwo, described him as “a hardworking Igbo man” and claimed he was “crying out for help while the officer pressed down on his neck.” He added that Kelechi left behind three young children in Nigeria.
According to reports from AFP, Swiss authorities claimed the incident occurred during a routine check related to suspected drug activity. They alleged that Kelechi fled but was later apprehended.
He reportedly became unwell during questioning and died at the police station despite emergency efforts to revive him.
A criminal investigation has been opened by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Switzerland’s Vaud region. An autopsy and other forensic examinations are ongoing.
Reacting to the incident, NIDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, described the situation as “very sad and unfortunate.” He stated, “This is not something we are going to condone. Irrespective of whatever the person may have done, he should have been given fair treatment.”
He added, “If we are able to gather all the necessary information surrounding his death, we will issue an official statement. Also, if the family can reach out to us or send a formal petition, we will be in a better position to know what happened.”
NIDCOM assured the public that it is committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served.
