The Nigeria Customs Service has begun disciplinary proceedings against one of its officers after a video surfaced online showing an alleged attempt to extort money from a motorist along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.

The clip, which circulated widely on social media, captured a uniformed officer questioning a driver about vehicle documents and claiming there were unresolved charges linked to past clearances. The situation reportedly escalated when the officer suggested the issue could be settled with a payment of about ₦200,000.

In the recording, the motorist challenged the demand and declined to comply, later leaving the scene. It is not clear whether any money was eventually paid before the vehicle was allowed to go.

Following public backlash, the Customs Service confirmed that the officer has been removed from operational duties and handed over to its internal police unit for investigation. The service said the conduct seen in the video did not reflect its professional standards and would not be tolerated.

Officials added that the matter is being reviewed in line with internal disciplinary procedures, and appropriate sanctions will follow if the officer is found culpable.

The incident has once again raised concerns about alleged misconduct by enforcement agents on major highways, especially during routine vehicle checks and document verification.
