US President Donald Trump has returned to the White House earlier than scheduled after cutting short his weekend stay at Camp David in Maryland.

Trump had been expected to remain at the presidential retreat until Sunday but returned to Washington on Saturday as tensions continued to rise in the Middle East.

The White House did not immediately give a reason for the change in Trump’s schedule. Weekend travel plans can sometimes be altered because of weather or other security considerations.

His early return came as Saudi Arabia reported a missile attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, an Iran-backed group, towards the capital, Riyadh.

The attack occurred after a fire was reported near Riyadh’s international airport, adding to concerns over the growing instability in the region.

Following the development, the United States State Department and several US embassies issued security alerts to American citizens in the Middle East.

The State Department warned that the ongoing conflict could escalate rapidly and advised Americans outside the region to seriously reconsider travelling to or through the Middle East.

The latest developments come amid heightened tensions involving Iran, Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, raising fresh concerns about security across the region.
