United States President Donald Trump has warned Iran that any attempt to assassinate him would trigger a devastating military response from Washington.
Trump said the US has about 1,000 missiles ready for immediate launch, with thousands more available if Tehran carries out such an attack. His remarks come amid renewed tensions despite a memorandum of understanding signed by both countries last month to reduce hostilities.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of failing to honour the interim agreement, saying Washington’s actions amount to a breach of its commitments. Araghchi arrived in Muscat, Oman, on Saturday for talks aimed at easing tensions.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also appealed to both sides to respect the agreement during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, stressing the need to preserve regional peace. Pakistan has played a key role in facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
Meanwhile, Iran said recent attacks caused an estimated $300 million in damage to its scientific and research infrastructure. Iranian officials insisted the facilities were dedicated to civilian research and pledged to rebuild them.
Elsewhere, regional tensions remained high. Israeli forces reportedly arrested a Palestinian man during a raid in Nablus in the occupied West Bank, while Lebanese state media reported Israeli air and drone strikes in southern Lebanon.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also reported a sharp rise in Palestinian displacement in the occupied West Bank, saying more than 3,200 people have been forced from their homes this year due to demolitions and settler violence.
