US President Donald Trump expressed gratitude to Iran on Friday after reports emerged that the country had called off the scheduled executions of hundreds of protesters detained during recent unrest.
Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he respected the decision to cancel over 800 planned hangings, which he described as a significant development.
In recent weeks, Trump had repeatedly threatened military action to protect protesters, amid reports from rights groups that Iranian security forces had killed thousands. However, he indicated on Wednesday that the killings had stopped, prompting him to hold off on any intervention.
Trump also dismissed claims by Gulf officials that Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman had influenced his decision. “Nobody convinced me, I convinced myself,” he told reporters as he departed the White House for Florida. He added that Iran’s decision not to carry out the executions “had a big impact.”
