Russian attacks on energy facilities have disrupted electricity supply to nearly 850,000 customers in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions, as the country faces another winter under continued bombardment.
The DTEK power company said more than 600,000 residents in the central Dnipropetrovsk region lost electricity following an overnight strike that damaged key energy infrastructure.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the company said repair teams were working to restore power but faced difficulties because of repeated Russian attacks.
The northeastern Kharkiv region was also affected after a Russian drone struck a critical infrastructure facility in the city of Zlatopil.
Zlatopil Mayor Mykola Baksheyev said the attack left nearly 250,000 customers without electricity. He added that repair work had begun, although authorities could not provide a definite timeline for the restoration of power.
The latest attacks followed another major assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which left residents in five regions without electricity and disrupted power transmission in Kyiv, according to the country’s energy ministry.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of escalating its attacks to increase pressure on Kyiv ahead of US-brokered talks involving Ukraine and Russia in Abu Dhabi, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy network and other critical infrastructure since launching its full-scale invasion more than four years ago.
With temperatures already close to freezing, the continued attacks have raised concerns about the country’s ability to maintain electricity and heating supplies during the coming winter.
