Iran has named Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as its interim Supreme Leader following the death of the country’s top authority, according to reports from Iranian state-linked media.
The decision was reached after the Expediency Discernment Council selected Arafi as its representative on the Guardian Council, paving the way for his inclusion in the temporary leadership structure.
Under Iran’s constitution, a Leadership Council takes over the responsibilities of the Supreme Leader when the position becomes vacant. This arrangement remains in place until the Assembly of Experts formally chooses a new leader.
Arafi, 67, is a senior cleric and an influential figure within Iran’s political and religious establishment. He will serve on the three-member interim council alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei.
The interim council is legally mandated to manage state affairs, ensure continuity of leadership, and oversee key decisions during the transition period.
Iran has been gripped by heightened tensions following recent developments linked to the ongoing conflict involving the country, Israel, and the United States. Authorities say the leadership transition process will follow constitutional provisions to maintain stability while a permanent successor is considered.
