The Lagos State High Court has sentenced Andrew Ominikoron, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging for the rape and murder of 22-year-old Oluwabamise Ayanwola.
Justice Sherifat Sonaike delivered the judgment at the Tafawa Balewa Square Annexe on Friday, ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
“For the death of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy upon you,” the judge declared.
Ominikoron, who faced a five-count charge including conspiracy, rape, murder, and sexual assault, pleaded not guilty throughout the trial. The Lagos State Government prosecuted the case and called 11 witnesses to testify against him.
The incident occurred on February 26, 2022, near the Lekki-Ajah Conservation Centre. Ayanwola was last seen boarding a BRT bus driven by Ominikoron at Chevron. Her body was discovered nine days later on Carter Bridge, sparking outrage and public protests.
Despite denying all allegations, Ominikoron admitted during his defense that a male passenger on the bus allegedly threatened him with a gun and took control of the vehicle.
One of the charges also involved the rape of another passenger, Maryland Ojiezelu, and the sexual assault of Dr. Anosike Victoria.
The offences violated Sections 411, 223, 260, and 165 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
The tragic case of Bamise drew national attention and led to calls for improved safety and oversight in the BRT system.
