Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will travel to Washington on Monday for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump aimed at finding a path to end the war with Russia.
Zelensky announced the visit after a phone call with Trump on Saturday, during which the U.S. president shared key details from his recent meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska. That summit ended without a ceasefire or major breakthrough.
“I will meet President Trump in Washington, D.C., on Monday to discuss how to stop the war and the killings,” Zelensky said, expressing appreciation for the invitation.
The Ukrainian president described his call with Trump as detailed and productive, noting that it began privately and later included several European leaders. He stressed that Ukraine wants its European partners involved in every stage of the peace process.
Zelensky also repeated Kyiv’s call for a three-way summit with Trump and Putin, an idea Ukraine supports but which Moscow has so far rejected. “Decisions of this magnitude should be addressed directly by leaders, and a trilateral format would be appropriate,” he said.
The Washington talks will follow Trump’s discussions with Putin, which ended without a deal but included U.S. proposals for NATO-style security assurances for Ukraine.
