World leaders and European royal families have expressed their condolences following the death of Norway’s King Harald V at the age of 89.
Harald, who was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, died after decades on the Norwegian throne. His death has prompted tributes from monarchs, presidents and other international leaders who remembered him for his long service to Norway and his commitment to public life.
Britain’s King Charles III described Harald as a much-loved relative and friend, praising his dedication to Norway and the way he guided the country through periods of significant change.
The monarchs of Denmark and Sweden also paid tribute to Harald, describing him as an exceptional leader and a close friend. Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf noted that Harald represented Norway with distinction both as monarch and as a sportsman.
Norway’s royal family also received condolences from the Netherlands and Belgium. The Dutch royal family highlighted their longstanding friendship with Harald, while Belgium’s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde remembered his humour, sincerity and humanity.
Spain’s royal household described the late Norwegian king as a figure of dignity and responsibility who devoted himself to serving his country.
Beyond Europe, Jordan’s King Abdullah ordered three days of mourning in honour of Harald. The Jordanian Royal Hashemite Court expressed sympathy with the Norwegian people and royal family.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was deeply saddened by Harald’s death, recalling his work on children’s welfare, environmental concerns, diversity and humanitarian causes.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte praised Harald’s leadership and his strong connection with Norway’s military, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described him as a monarch who served his country with humility and a strong sense of responsibility.
French President Emmanuel Macron also mourned Harald, saying the Norwegian monarch had played a role in strengthening relations between Norway and France.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised Harald’s wisdom and commitment to his country, while recalling the late king’s support for Ukraine during Russia’s invasion.
In the United States, President Donald Trump described Harald as a respected leader who was deeply loved by the Norwegian people and offered condolences to the royal family.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada shared Norway’s grief, recalling a meeting with Harald earlier in the year and his warm remarks about relations between the two countries.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also praised Harald’s long service and his contribution to strengthening ties between Norway and Italy.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog remembered Harald for his loyalty and dedication, while noting his early support for the Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestinians.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin joined the tributes, describing Harald as a steadfast leader who devoted himself to his country.
Harald’s death has drawn mourners to Norway’s Royal Palace, where flowers and candles have been placed in his memory.
His son, Haakon, has automatically succeeded him as Norway’s new king.
