The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has raised its petrol pump price by N35 per litre to N1,405, reversing an earlier reduction to N1,370 amid controversy over a proposed fuel discount.
Checks at NNPCL filling stations on Friday, October 16, showed that the new price had taken effect following an adjustment reportedly announced a day earlier.
The latest increase marks another change in the state-owned oil company’s pricing within the week, with motorists facing renewed uncertainty over the cost of petrol.
NNPCL had reduced its pump price to N1,370 per litre on Monday after previously selling the product at N1,405 per litre.
The latest adjustment comes as the Federal Government moves to clarify its proposed petrol pricing arrangements. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele announced on Thursday a proposed fixed gantry price of N1,375 per litre.
However, the proposed gantry price differs from the N1,350 per litre figure associated with the disputed fuel discount, adding to questions surrounding the pricing arrangement.
NNPCL has yet to publicly explain the reason for its latest pump price increase.
The development leaves motorists and other petrol consumers awaiting further clarification on the government’s proposed pricing measures and their potential impact on retail fuel costs.
