We Installed CCTV on Third Mainland Bridge To Prevent Suicide – Umahi

- 5 April 2025

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos as part of efforts to improve safety and security.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Umahi explained that the surveillance system aims to deter suicide attempts and curb illegal sand mining on the bridge.

“We have put CCTVs down under the deck so that anybody who is excavating sand within the 10-kilometre radius will be spotted,” Umahi said. “We have built, beside the bank of the sea on Third Mainland Bridge, an examination house where we have the police, navy, army and local security. They will all be there watching the CCTV so that anybody who is trying to take his life on the Third Mainland Bridge, they will spot the person.”

The initiative also addresses the growing concern of sand excavation under the bridge, with Umahi emphasizing that such activities would now be easily monitored and stopped.

In addition, the Minister addressed the temporary closure of the Independence Bridge in Lagos, attributing it to a structural fault caused by an eroded sand filling beneath the approach slab.

Umahi also provided an update on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, confirming that a major section will be ready for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu on May 25, 2025.

“We’ve achieved about 15 kilometers of section one and expect that by May 25, 30 kilometers continuously will be available for Mr. President to commission,” he said.
