Violence broke out early Sunday when hundreds of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s supporters overwhelmed police and stormed a South Korean court building.

The attack came hours after a court ruling extended Yoon’s detention, following his arrest over allegations of insurrection linked to his controversial declaration of martial law last month.

The protesters damaged property and clashed with authorities in a chaotic scene, leading to multiple injuries and dozens of arrests.

Shortly after the court decision was announced around 3 a.m. (1800 GMT), the protesters flooded the building, ignoring police efforts to maintain order.

Fire extinguishers were used to blast back riot police guarding the entrance, and the crowd surged inside, destroying office furniture, equipment, and fittings.

Footage from the scene showed the protesters wreaking havoc as they overwhelmed security measures.

Police eventually restored order a few hours later, arresting 46 people involved in the violence.

Nine officers were injured in the clashes, while about 40 individuals, including both police and protesters, suffered minor injuries.

In a statement, Acting President Choi Sang-mok condemned the incident, calling the attack “unimaginable in a democratic society.” He expressed strong regret over the violence and pledged to strengthen security measures at future gatherings.

Authorities are also investigating the identities of other individuals involved in the unrest.
