About 300 Nigerians who previously participated in United States government exchange programmes gathered in Abuja for a networking and engagement event organised by the Abuja chapter of the United States Government Exchange Alumni Association of Nigeria (USGEAAN).
The event, held at the National Assembly Library Complex, created an opportunity for former exchange participants living in the Federal Capital Territory to reconnect, build professional relationships and discuss social and development-related issues affecting the country.
According to the association, the gathering highlighted the long-term value of U.S.-sponsored exchange programmes. It noted that many alumni continue to contribute to governance, civic engagement and public service across different sectors in Nigeria.
Officials from the United States Embassy attended the programme, led by Public Diplomacy Officer Raisa Dukas. In her remarks, she emphasised the importance of exchange programme alumni in supporting democratic values and strengthening ties between Nigeria and the United States.
She also introduced “Freedom 250,” a year-long campaign encouraging global partners to celebrate American ideals such as courage, generosity and innovation ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary.
Dukas said the strength of the alumni association lies in how members use their knowledge and experience to support national development. She added that across Nigeria, alumni are using skills gained abroad to improve institutions, promote civic participation and support community projects.
The national president of USGEAAN, Dr Nosayaba Tukura, also stressed the importance of coordinated action among alumni nationwide.
Represented by the association’s General Secretary, Olalekan Adeeko, she explained that the national body is focused on strengthening collaboration and ensuring alumni efforts translate into measurable impact.
Speaking at the event, the spokesperson of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the USGEAAN Abuja Chapter, Akin Rotimi, praised members for their participation.
He also unveiled the chapter’s 2026 work plan, which focuses on improving administration, boosting partnerships, expanding community projects in Abuja and supporting national association programmes.
Rotimi said Abuja’s position as Nigeria’s political centre places extra responsibility on the chapter to build a strong and active alumni network that supports leadership, mentorship and innovation across the country.
USGEAAN is a non-partisan network made up of Nigerians who benefited from U.S. government-funded exchange initiatives. The association focuses on leadership development, community service and strengthening cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
