Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has criticised President Donald Trump’s military operation in Venezuela, calling it a “dangerous mistake” that puts American troops and resources at risk.

Harris reacted to the overnight operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, arguing that it prioritises political ambition and oil interests over national security. She said the action bypasses legal norms and undermines international law.

In a statement on social media, Harris said the Trump administration’s explanation that the strike targeted a narco-terrorist network — was misleading. She warned that such interventions often lead to long-term chaos, costing lives and money, while offering little benefit to American families.

She also pointed to inconsistencies in U.S. policy, noting that the legitimate democratic opposition in Venezuela has been sidelined while deals reportedly continue with Maduro’s former associates. Harris questioned how the administration could claim to defend democracy while ignoring these voices.

Harris urged a shift in U.S. priorities, calling for more focus on domestic issues and global alliances instead of military interventions that destabilise regions and “offer no real gain for the American people.”
