US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, set to last for three days starting Saturday, in what he says could open the door to broader peace talks.
The agreement reportedly includes a mutual exchange of 1,000 prisoners from both sides. Trump said the pause in fighting was part of efforts to encourage a longer-term settlement to the ongoing war.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began in 2022, has continued despite repeated diplomatic attempts to end it. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously accused Russia of ignoring earlier ceasefire proposals, while Moscow has insisted it remains open to limited pauses under certain conditions.
Before the announcement, both countries continued exchanging strikes, with drone attacks and air raids reported in several regions.
Russia claimed it had intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones, while Ukraine said Russian forces were still carrying out offensive operations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has not issued a detailed response to the latest ceasefire declaration, though Russia had earlier announced its own short pause tied to Victory Day commemorations.
