The Nigerian government says President Bola Tinubu will travel to the United States to meet President Donald Trump when the conditions are suitable. The assurance was given by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, amid escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
The tensions began after Trump recently redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), citing what he described as widespread killings of Christians. The US leader also threatened possible military action if Nigeria failed to address rising insecurity in the country.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Idris emphasized that while the situation is serious, the Nigerian government is actively engaging with the US to clarify the country’s position. “We believe he will go [to the US] once the situation is right. President Tinubu has previously visited America and represented Nigeria at the UN,” the minister said.
Following Trump’s warnings, a high-level Nigerian delegation, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, has been dispatched to the United States to engage in diplomatic discussions. The government has consistently denied targeting any religious group, emphasizing Nigeria’s constitutional commitment to protecting citizens of all faiths.
Security challenges in Nigeria remain acute, with recent attacks in Kebbi and Niger states resulting in the abduction of numerous students. These incidents underscore the urgent need for coordinated national security efforts.
Meanwhile, the US Congress has begun reviewing Trump’s CPC designation, drawing global attention to Nigeria’s security situation. The Federal Government continues to maintain that it is taking significant measures to address threats across the country.
