President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 12, as part of activities marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration in Nigeria.

The event, which will be held at the House of Representatives Chamber at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. with preliminary proceedings. President Tinubu is expected to arrive by noon to deliver a special address.

According to a statement released on Sunday by House of Representatives spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the gathering marks a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey.

“The theme for this year’s celebration is: ‘26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development,’” Rotimi said.

The statement, formally conveyed to lawmakers via an internal memorandum from House Clerk Yahaya Danzaria, also confirmed that the event will include goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of national honours on select legislators by the President.

“This joint sitting represents a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” the statement read. “It underscores the pivotal role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic values, fostering accountability, and advancing national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule.”

Nigerians are urged to mark Democracy Day as a time for reflection, renewed patriotism, and a stronger commitment to building a more united and prosperous nation.
