Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has renewed his commitment to ensuring that Lagos State’s 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) are officially listed in Nigeria’s constitution as full local government areas.

He made the pledge during the unveiling of several development projects in the Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, Lagos. Bamidele emphasized that giving the LCDAs constitutional status would strengthen grassroots governance and boost local development efforts.

Reflecting on his time as Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos when the LCDAs were created, Bamidele said it’s now up to the National Assembly to complete the process by recognizing them in the constitution. He pointed out that Lagos State had already done its part and that the Supreme Court had upheld their creation.

“We are determined to take all necessary steps to ensure these LCDAs are officially recognized,” he assured.

He also acknowledged Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat for leading Lagos State’s delegation to a recent Senate hearing on constitutional amendments, noting that the state’s position was clearly presented at the forum.

During the event, Bamidele applauded outgoing LCDA Chairman Olusola Ajala for his leadership and efforts to bring development closer to the people. Other political figures at the event, including APC Lagos Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, encouraged residents to participate in ongoing voter registration, while Senator Ganiyu Solomon praised the LCDA administration for fulfilling its promises to the community.

The call to recognize Lagos LCDAs constitutionally continues to gain traction as lawmakers push for reforms aimed at strengthening local administration across the country.
