Security agencies in Kaduna have intercepted a man allegedly attempting to influence Saturday’s bye-election with large sums of cash.

The suspect, identified as Shehu Aliyu Patangi, was picked up around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday at a hotel along Turunku Road in Kaduna metropolis. He was arrested in a joint operation by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Authorities said he was found in possession of ₦25,963,000, suspected to be set aside for voter inducement. According to the Kaduna State Police Command, preliminary findings suggest the money was meant to compromise the electoral process.

Commissioner of Police Rabiu Muhammad confirmed the arrest, stressing that the command would not tolerate attempts to manipulate elections. “The suspect admitted to the act and pleaded for leniency, but we will ensure that anyone involved in vote buying or electoral malpractice faces justice,” he stated.

Police further warned political parties, candidates, and their supporters against violence, thuggery, or any activity that could disrupt the polls. Intelligence reports, the command noted, revealed plans by some actors to instigate unrest.

To prevent such incidents, security personnel have been stationed across polling units, collation centers, and other strategic areas in the state.

“The safety of voters remains our priority,” the police said, urging residents to come out and cast their votes without fear.
