The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission has scheduled the state’s local government elections for Saturday, September 26, 2026.
The commission’s chairman, Charles Ejiogu, announced the date in a statement issued on September 11, informing political parties and other stakeholders of the planned exercise.
According to the commission, the election will cover the 27 local government areas and 305 council wards in the state. Voting will take place across 4,758 polling units.
Ejiogu urged all registered political parties to prepare for the election and comply with the necessary requirements ahead of the exercise.
He explained that the September 26 date follows the 360-day notice of election issued by the commission on September 18, 2025, in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended.
The commission also said consultations with key stakeholders are ongoing as preparations for the election continue.
