Russia carried out heavy overnight strikes on Ukraine, leaving at least 10 people injured, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday.
The attacks involved “hundreds” of missiles and drones, hitting residential areas and causing fires. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said the strikes happened while civilians were asleep, calling it another deliberate attack on ordinary people.
In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that six people were hurt. Five of them were hospitalized, while one received treatment at the scene. In the Zaporizhzhia region, four more people were injured.
Poland, which borders Ukraine, scrambled fighter jets and raised its air defence systems to high alert in response to the assault. The Polish military said the move was precautionary to secure its airspace and protect citizens.
Ukraine’s presidential office condemned Russia’s actions and urged Western countries to increase sanctions. “Economic pressure on Moscow must be stronger,” said Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The strikes came shortly after Zelensky revealed that Ukraine had received a U.S.-made Patriot air defence system from Israel, with two more expected in the coming months.
Tensions between Russia and NATO are also rising, as several European countries have accused Moscow of violating their airspace with drones and jets—allegations Russia denies. Moscow has warned that any attack on objects inside its airspace would face a decisive response.
Meanwhile, concerns are mounting over the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been disconnected from Ukraine’s grid for four days, raising fears of a potential nuclear incident.
The latest wave of strikes underscores the growing intensity of Russia’s air campaign and the risk of the war spilling over into neighbouring countries.
