The South-West zone of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, demanding the immediate reversal of the recent hike in telecommunication tariffs.
The student body emphasized that failure to address the issue will result in large-scale mobilization across campuses, leading to protests.
In a press conference held on Thursday in Lagos, NAUS highlighted the importance of affordable internet access for students in this digital age, particularly for online learning and academic research.
“Students across campuses depend on affordable internet access to attend virtual lectures, conduct research, submit assignments, and participate in online discussions,” said Tiamiyu Olayinka, the NAUS National Vice President (South-West). “By increasing telecom tariffs, these critical academic engagements are being disrupted.”
NAUS also raised other pressing concerns, including rising insecurity on campuses, inconsistent power supply, and the persistent issue of strikes affecting academic schedules.
“Failure to meet up with our demands will leave us with no choice but to mobilize students across South-West and take a bold step to defend our rights and secure a better academic environment for all,” Olayinka warned.
The student body made it clear that their primary focus remains on safeguarding their educational future and ensuring uninterrupted access to necessary digital resources.
