Tanzanian singer and entrepreneur Juma Jux has reportedly suffered major losses after protesters looted his fashion store during ongoing demonstrations following the country’s disputed general election.
The protests, which erupted on Thursday, were triggered by widespread allegations of election irregularities and the detention of opposition leaders. Angry demonstrators have taken to the streets demanding the annulment of the results and a fresh presidential vote.
Amid the chaos, social media was flooded with claims that Jux’s luxury store — estimated by some users to be worth millions of dollars — had been set on fire. However, the singer’s wife, Priscilla Ojo, quickly dismissed those reports.
Taking to her Snapchat account, Priscilla clarified that the store had indeed been looted but not burned down. She wrote simply, “Looted, not burnt.”
The full extent of the damage to Jux’s business has yet to be confirmed, but local sources say several shops in the area were also targeted as tensions continue to rise across Tanzania.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the unrest, which has left many businesses and residents counting their losses.
