The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the reported attack on the family home of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in Obeiba-Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area.

According to SP Williams Ovye-Aya, spokesperson for the command, the Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, has directed the Deputy Commissioner in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to begin a “discreet and immediate” investigation into the incident.

“This is with a view to ascertaining the cause of the attack, apprehending the perpetrators, and bringing them to justice,” Ovye-Aya said.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of April 16, involved three unidentified hoodlums armed with cutlasses, who reportedly damaged several front window panes of the residence.

The police said the attack was first reported by Yakubu Ovanja, an aide to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, via a distress call to the Divisional Police Officer in Okehi.

“Immediately the information was received, the DPO mobilised officers to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment,” the statement said. “They met a young man named Michael Akpoti who narrated how the hoodlums tried to break into the house before fleeing when he raised the alarm.”

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan confirmed the attack and suggested it may have been an assassination attempt.

“The gunmen may have assumed I was in town, hence the attack on my family house,” she stated. “Thankfully, security operatives and community members responded swiftly and chased them off. No one was hurt.”

A formal complaint has since been lodged at the local police area command.

The police emphasized that the investigation will be thorough to determine the facts surrounding the incident.
