Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has congratulated Nigeria’s Super Eagles following their 2–0 victory against Algeria in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals in Marrakech, Morocco.
The win secured Nigeria a spot in the semi-finals, where they will face hosts Morocco, who eliminated Cameroon in their quarter-final clash. Nigeria had entered the match brimming with confidence after a commanding 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16, scoring a tournament-high 12 goals in four matches.
From the first whistle, the Super Eagles dominated possession, keeping Algeria on the back foot.
Striker Victor Osimhen spearheaded Nigeria’s attack with pace and strength, supported by Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams, while Alex Iwobi controlled the midfield. Nigeria created multiple scoring opportunities in the first half, though Adams missed a one-on-one chance and another shot was cleared off the line.
The breakthrough came in the second half when Osimhen scored a powerful header. Later, Adams converted a chance set up by Osimhen, sealing the 2–0 win and sending Nigeria through comfortably.
Obi took to his official X account to commend the team, writing: “Huge congratulations to our Super Eagles for flying high over the Desert Warriors! A 2–0 victory that sends a clear message to the rest of the continent. Clinical finishing, solid defence, and a gift to over 200 million fans cheering you on. Keep the momentum going into the semi-finals!”
The Super Eagles now prepare for a high-stakes semi-final clash against Morocco as they continue their bid for the AFCON trophy.
