The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has selected former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his vice-presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

The announcement followed Obi’s official emergence as the party’s flagbearer after the NDC concluded its presidential primary. Party leaders confirmed the pairing shortly after the nomination process was completed.

Both politicians recently moved from the African Democratic Congress to the NDC, citing internal disagreements and prolonged legal disputes within their former political platform as key reasons for their exit.

Their joint ticket is being viewed as a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening the party’s national appeal ahead of the polls. Obi is widely regarded as having strong backing among younger voters and supporters in the South-East and parts of the South-South, while Kwankwaso maintains significant influence in Kano and other northern political strongholds through his established movement.

Officials of the NDC expressed confidence that the collaboration between the two high-profile figures would improve the party’s competitiveness in the upcoming presidential election, describing it as a blend of regional strength and political experience.
