The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed calls for his removal from office, saying only President Bola Tinubu has the authority to sack him.
Wike made the statement during a thank-you visit to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he met with party leaders, traditional rulers, women groups, and youths.
The visit was part of his ongoing tour of the state’s 23 local government areas to appreciate supporters for their backing in the 2023 elections and to rally continued support for President Tinubu ahead of 2027.
Speaking at the event, the former Rivers State governor argued that politics is driven by interests and power, not emotions. He stressed that political influence is earned through strategy and strength, insisting that Obio/Akpor plays a decisive role in determining electoral outcomes in the state.
According to Wike, the local government area has historically influenced the emergence of governors and senators in Rivers East, warning critics not to underestimate its voting power. He said those who attack the area politically should be prepared to face the consequences at the polls.
Addressing demands for his removal as FCT minister, Wike said such calls were misplaced. He maintained that his performance speaks for itself and that only the president who appointed him can decide whether he should remain in office. He added that he remains confident he has delivered results for residents of the FCT.
Earlier, the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, Gift Worlu, praised Wike’s political relevance, describing him as a major force in the council, Rivers State, and Nigeria. Worlu pledged continued loyalty to Wike’s leadership and hinted at support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Also speaking, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, reaffirmed the legislature’s support for Wike and the president, urging him to ignore critics and remain focused on governance.
The visit comes amid heightened political tension in Rivers State.
The State House of Assembly recently initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct. Lawmakers accused the governor of unauthorized spending, withholding statutory funds, and defying court rulings, among other claims.
