King Charles III and Queen Camilla begin the second day of their historic state visit to the U.S. on Tuesday in Washington, D.C. The visit commemorates America’s 250th anniversary of independence from the British crown.
Their trip marks the first time the U.K.’s reigning monarch visits the U.S. since Queen Elizabeth II visited in 2007.
King Charles sat for a bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office and addressed a joint meeting of Congress.
The king’s joint address was the second time in history a British monarch addresses U.S. Congress, the first being Queen Elizabeth’s post-Gulf War 1991 address.
King Charles III is visiting during a time of heightened tensions between the U.S. and its ally, the United Kingdom, as President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer clash over the Iran war and the Strait of Hormuz.
In addition to addressing Congress, King Charles met with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., Tuesday. The king and queen are also slated to participate in a state dinner with Trump and first lady Melania Trump this evening.
