The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has assured Nigerians that the Indomie Noodles Vegetable Flavour recently linked to an allergy alert abroad is not available in the Nigerian market.
NAFDAC explained that the affected product, which was flagged by food safety authorities in France over the presence of undeclared allergens such as milk and eggs, was not produced in Nigeria and is not registered for sale in the country.
The agency said the clarification became necessary following public concern after reports about the product circulated online.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC disclosed that it has intensified nationwide monitoring to ensure the product does not enter the country. Zonal directors and state coordinators have been directed to remove the noodles if found anywhere in Nigeria.
NAFDAC also noted that noodles are on Nigeria’s import prohibition list, making their importation illegal. According to the agency, this policy greatly reduces the chances of the affected product being sold locally.
It added that all Indomie noodles and other noodle brands approved for sale in Nigeria are manufactured within the country and only receive registration after meeting strict safety and quality standards.
The agency further revealed that its Ports Inspection Directorate has been placed on high alert to prevent the entry of the affected noodles through Nigeria’s borders.
NAFDAC advised consumers to remain vigilant and report any suspected sale of the product to the nearest NAFDAC office or through its official reporting channels.
The agency reassured Nigerians of its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring the safety of food products sold in the country.
