The Labour Party (LP) has formally designated Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as its National Leader, while extending goodwill to its former presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, following his decision to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The announcement was made by the party’s National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, after a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) held on Wednesday. According to a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, party leaders deliberated on internal cohesion, expansion plans, and the LP’s broader political strategy.
The NWC said its members unanimously endorsed Governor Otti for the national leadership role, citing the need for clear direction as the party moves forward. The committee also conveyed its best wishes to Peter Obi, acknowledging his past contributions and wishing him success in his new political platform.
In another key decision, the Labour Party recognized former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as its National Chairman. The party noted that this position aligns with the Supreme Court ruling delivered on April 4, 2025, which held that the tenure of the former chairman, Julius Abure, had lapsed.
LP leadership called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to give full effect to the court judgment by recognizing Usman and Nwokocha as the party’s legitimate national officers.
The party further emphasized that all forthcoming congresses and its National Convention would be conducted strictly in line with provisions of the party constitution, urging members across the country to participate actively in the processes.
Reaffirming its vision, the Labour Party thanked its supporters nationwide and maintained that it remains united and focused on promoting good governance, social justice, and equal opportunities for Nigerians.
