Senator Ireti Kingibe has broken ranks with her colleagues in the Senate over the sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, calling for an open and transparent investigation into the claims made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The allegations, which have sparked significant public debate, have divided opinions in the Senate.

Kingibe, who initially appeared dismissive of the accusations, clarified her stance after facing backlash on social media.

She emphasized that she would never support any form of harassment, whether against women or men.

“As the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, I assure Nigerians that I will be at the forefront of championing the sexual harassment case involving my colleague, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan,” Kingibe declared.

“Once an accusation of sexual harassment is formally tabled before the Senate, it is incumbent on the body to investigate it thoroughly.”

Kingibe also stressed her commitment to gender equality and social justice, underlining her dedication to protecting the rights of women and girls across Nigeria. “I remain steadfast in the fight against all forms of violence against girls and women,” she added.

Meanwhile, a group of women’s rights activists, Women for Change Vanguard, has petitioned the United Nations to intervene in the matter, urging Akpoti-Uduaghan to present evidence supporting her allegations.

The group, led by Mrs. Irene Imoh, staged a peaceful protest at the UN House in Abuja on Friday, demanding accountability.

“The burden of proof lies with the accuser,” stated Imoh. “If Senator Natasha claims to have been a victim of sexual harassment, we urge her to provide credible evidence to support her accusations.”

The controversy surrounding Akpabio’s alleged misconduct continues to capture national attention, with both sides demanding justice and transparency.
