Israel and Morocco have agreed to upgrade their diplomatic missions to full embassies as part of efforts to deepen relations between the two countries.

The agreement was reached during a meeting involving the foreign ministers of Israel and Morocco and the United States ambassador to the United Nations in New York on Wednesday.

Following the meeting, the countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties, including the appointment of ambassadors and the conversion of their existing missions into embassies.

A joint statement issued by the three countries said establishing full diplomatic and friendly relations would serve the interests of both Israel and Morocco and contribute to regional peace.

The two countries restored diplomatic relations in 2020 under the Abraham Accords, a US-backed initiative that saw Israel establish or strengthen ties with several Arab countries.

No date was announced for the opening of the embassies.

Israel had previously announced plans to establish an embassy in Morocco in 2022 during a visit by its then-Foreign Minister, Yair Lapid, but the process was not completed.

Beyond diplomatic ties, Israel and Morocco also agreed to pursue new economic cooperation. The two sides said they expect to conclude several economic agreements before the end of the year.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry also said senior officials from both countries are expected to make reciprocal visits in the coming months.
