The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd), has called on the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to play a vital role in restoring peace and unity in the state amid political unrest and security concerns.

Speaking during a meeting with leaders of the Rivers State chapter of CAN at the Government House on Tuesday, Ibas underscored the importance of the Church’s involvement in reconciliation efforts.

“The unity of the Church is the seedbed for the unity of the state. Where the Church leads in love, the people will follow in peace,” he said.

The retired naval officer, who was appointed following the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, said his mandate is to restore law and order and pave the way for a return to democratic governance.

“Since assuming office on March 20, 2025, I have engaged in broad consultations with civil society, traditional rulers, and local officials to rebuild trust and cooperation,” he added.

He urged CAN to use its influence to promote peace, unity, and forgiveness across communities. “Sustainable peace requires dialogue, collaboration, and understanding,” he stressed.

Responding, the CAN chairman in Rivers, Most Reverend Dr D.E. Kala-Dukubo, expressed willingness to support the peace process but also called for government inclusiveness and attention to vital civic needs.

“We urge the Administrator not to neglect critical aspects of governance, especially environmental sanitation,” he said. Kala-Dukubo also condemned the widespread misinformation, stating that it painted Rivers as a war zone and deterred investment.

Ibas concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to justice, equity, and people-focused leadership, expressing confidence that with CAN’s support, Rivers State would emerge “stronger and more united.”
