Senate President Godswill Akpabio says his rise from humble beginnings to the leadership of the National Assembly is proof of God’s favour, describing himself as the highest-ranking Christian in government.

He made the remarks in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during the dedication of the Regina Coeli Parish Rectory, an event that drew top clergy, political leaders and members of the community. His comments were later shared in a statement issued by his media aide, Jackson Udom.

Akpabio said his journey to the Senate presidency showed that God can elevate anyone regardless of their background, urging Nigerians to stay committed to serving God and supporting the growth of the church.

He emphasised that even the smallest contribution to church projects carries spiritual significance, adding that he finds joy in supporting religious development initiatives.

The Senate President also revealed that a new worship centre within the National Assembly complex will be unveiled soon, noting that Nigerians from various walks of life will be invited for its commissioning.

At the ceremony, the Catholic Bishop of Uyo, Most Rev. John Ayah, praised Akpabio and his wife for their continuous support to the church, including hosting Catholic bishops nationwide earlier in the year. He encouraged the Senate President to ignore criticism that often comes with high office.

Akpabio’s remarks come at a time when conversations around Senate unity continue to draw attention. Recent suggestions of leadership plots were dismissed by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who reiterated that no impeachment moves exist and urged senators to prioritise stability in the chamber.

Former Senate Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu had previously acknowledged that some lawmakers made unsuccessful attempts to remove Akpabio, but said senior figures intervened to maintain peace.

Bamidele later clarified during plenary that such speculation should not distract the Senate from its legislative duties.
