Gambia Warns Citizens Against Fighting in Foreign Wars
The Gambian government has raised serious concern over citizens traveling abroad to take part in armed conflicts. Officials warn that some Gambians have been recruited under false promises of good jobs, only to end up fighting on the front lines.
Authorities say there is evidence that several Gambian nationals have lost their lives after joining such conflicts. While the statement did not specifically mention Ukraine, investigations have shown that Russia has recruited men from African countries, offering jobs but forcing them into military service.
Other African countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, have also expressed worry about the fate of their citizens involved in foreign wars. In November, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga reported that at least 1,436 people from 36 African nations were identified among Russian forces.
The Gambian government has urged all citizens to avoid traveling abroad for the purpose of fighting in conflicts, emphasizing the dangers involved.
