Edo Killing: Governor Suspends Security Chief, Bans Illegal Vigilante Groups

- 30 March 2025

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has taken decisive action following the brutal lynching of travelers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, on March 27.

The victims, primarily from northern Nigeria, were killed by an angry mob after being accused by a local vigilante group of carrying firearms.

Governor Okpebholo suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin, in response to the incident.

“The local vigilante group involved was operating illegally, and their actions do not align with the values of my administration,” Okpebholo stated in a press release issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor.

Additionally, all unregistered vigilante groups have been banned across the state.

“We will not tolerate any form of lawlessness, and investigations are underway. We are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the statement read.

So far, 14 individuals have been arrested in connection with the killings, and a manhunt is ongoing for others involved.

The state government has also reached out to the victims’ families and the Kano State Government, as many of the deceased were reportedly from Kano.

The government urged calm while promising a thorough investigation and swift justice. “Edo State remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its citizens,” the statement concluded.
