With just two days left before the August 12 deadline for tinted glass permits, many Nigerian motorists are worried as the police have yet to explain how enforcement will begin.
The Nigeria Police Force reintroduced its digital permit system on May 1, 2025, promising easier applications and greater transparency. A 30-day grace period was initially given before enforcement, but after complaints about delays and limited access in rural areas, the Inspector-General of Police extended the deadline to August 12.
Now, as the date approaches, the absence of fresh guidance has created uncertainty. Some drivers fear roadside harassment or extortion, while others question why they should pay for a permit when their cars came with factory-installed tints.
The N16,000 permit fee has also sparked criticism, with many saying it adds to the already high cost of living. Some motorists have called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend the policy, arguing that tinted windows are not a major security threat compared to other challenges facing the country.
Police spokesman ACP Muyiwa Adejobi said an update would be released “soon,” but no statement had been issued as of Sunday. For now, drivers remain unsure whether enforcement will begin immediately after the deadline or be postponed again.
