The Defence Headquarters has denied reports claiming Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations were cancelled due to an alleged coup attempt.

In a statement, Defence spokesperson Brigadier General Tukur Gusau described the report as false and aimed at spreading fear and distrust. He explained that the anniversary parade was only suspended to allow President Bola Tinubu attend an important meeting abroad and for the military to focus on ongoing security operations.

Gusau also clarified that the arrest of sixteen military officers, mentioned in the report, was part of a routine disciplinary process and not linked to any coup.

He urged Nigerians to ignore the rumours and assured that the Armed Forces remain loyal to the Constitution and President Tinubu.
