Left-wing independent politician Catherine Connolly has been declared the winner of Ireland’s presidential election, securing a decisive victory over her main rival, Heather Humphreys.

Connolly, 68, a lawyer and long-time member of parliament, won more than 63 percent of the votes, while Humphreys, representing the centrist bloc, trailed with about 29.5 percent. However, the election was marked by an unusually high number of spoiled ballots — nearly 13 percent of the 1.65 million votes cast — the highest in modern Irish history.

In her acceptance speech at Dublin Castle, Connolly described her win as a “privilege to serve,” pledging to be a president for all citizens, including those who did not support her. She promised to promote peace, environmental protection, and Ireland’s policy of neutrality in global affairs.

Her victory comes amid growing voter frustration over issues such as immigration, housing, and crime, as well as criticism over the lack of right-wing candidates on the ballot. Several conservative groups had called on voters to spoil their ballots in protest at what they described as a limited choice.

Connolly, a fluent Irish speaker known for her criticism of U.S. and EU foreign policy, will begin her seven-year term next month, succeeding President Michael D. Higgins, who has held the position since 2011.

Prime Minister Micheál Martin congratulated Connolly, calling her campaign “impactful” and expressing hope for continued cooperation between the presidency and government.

Connolly’s outspoken views — particularly her opposition to military spending, support for Palestinian causes, and advocacy for Irish reunification — are expected to shape her time in office and could potentially create tension with the government.

Political analysts say her win signals a growing appetite among Irish voters for change. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald hailed the result as proof of “a new political direction beyond the old parties,” while experts predict that the left-wing coalition backing Connolly could challenge the long-standing dominance of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael in future elections.
