The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured 16 out of 18 chairmanship seats in Ondo State’s local government elections.
Joseph Aeemo, Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), announced the results at the commission’s headquarters in Akure on Sunday.
He confirmed that while the rescheduled election is ongoing in Ondo West Local Government Area (LGA), results from Owo LGA are still awaited.
The election, held on Saturday, saw twelve political parties contesting for chairmanship and councillorship positions.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew from the election ahead of time, citing a lack of confidence in the credibility of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission.
The twelve participating parties included: Action Alliance, Action Democratic Party, Action People’s Party, All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Boot Party, and Labour Party, along with the National Rescue Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressive Party, and Zenith Labour Party.
The last local government election in the state took place on August 23, 2020, with the tenure of elected officials ending on August 22, 2023.
Since then, the administration of the 18 council areas has been overseen by civil servants, specifically Heads of Local Government Administrations. After multiple delays, the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission finally scheduled the election for January 18, 2025.
