Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has imposed an indefinite ban on masquerade displays across the state, citing escalating attacks on residents by criminals disguising themselves as traditional performers.
The governor announced the directive during a state function, noting that the decision followed several violent incidents linked to individuals using masquerade attire as a cover to terrorise communities.
“By my office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, I’m issuing an order. Anyone caught will be arrested and tried. They have been using it to cause trouble in some local government areas,” he declared.
Governor Eno, who emphasized his role as the Chief Security Officer of the state, ordered the Commissioner of Police and heads of other security agencies to strictly enforce the ban. “I’m directing the Commissioner of Police and other heads of security agencies to arrest and prosecute anyone caught,” he said.
He appealed to residents to prioritise peace and remain vigilant against activities capable of jeopardising public safety. “Let’s stop terrorising people. Let people have peace. All those I see when we’re driving, please let it be said it is hereby banned. No more,” the governor added.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command recently raised concerns about what it described as “suspected criminal masquerades.” Commissioner of Police Baba Azare confirmed that several suspects had already been arrested and are currently facing prosecution in connection with the incidents.
