Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has challenged President Bola Tinubu to explain how his administration has utilised the funds saved from petrol subsidy removal and more than $100bn in borrowed money.

Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, also demanded evidence of improvements in Nigerians’ living conditions since the current administration took office.

He made the call in a statement posted on his X account on Saturday, titled, “Good Day, Mr President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability.”

The former governor questioned how the government had spent the N15.8tn reportedly saved from subsidy removal, alongside revenue from increased taxation, foreign loans and other income sources.

He asked Tinubu to provide figures showing the number of Nigerians lifted out of poverty, out-of-school children returned to classrooms and functional primary healthcare centres established under his administration.

Obi also demanded an explanation of improvements in electricity supply, recalling the President’s earlier promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to address the country’s power challenges.

His comments followed Tinubu’s remarks at a campaign rally in Akwa Ibom State on Friday, where the President criticised Obi over his handling of erosion challenges during his tenure as Anambra governor.

In response, Obi urged Tinubu to visit other states across the country and engage directly with citizens on his government’s performance.

He argued that the resources available to the administration should translate into measurable improvements in education, healthcare, electricity supply and the general welfare of Nigerians.

On security, the former governor also asked the President to explain the steps taken to tackle terrorism and protect lives and property.

Obi maintained that Nigerians deserved clear answers on how public funds had been utilised and the results achieved with the resources entrusted to the government.
