The All Progressives Congress has emerged victorious in every chairmanship and councillorship position contested during the Gombe State local government elections.
Announcing the results on Saturday, the Chairman of the Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission, Abdullahi Garba, said the ruling party secured all 24 chairmanship seats and the 240 councillorship positions across the state.
Garba described the election as a landmark exercise, noting that it was the first to be conducted across 24 administrative councils following the creation of 13 Local Council Development Areas by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
According to him, the expansion was aimed at bringing governance and development closer to residents. He explained that the commission studied similar structures in other states before obtaining the legal backing required to conduct elections in the newly established councils.
The GOSIEC chairman said the changes increased the number of chairmanship positions from 11 to 24, while councillorship seats rose from 114 to 240.
He added that although several political parties participated in the election, the APC was the only party that fielded candidates in all 24 councils. Other parties, including the African Action Congress, Democratic Leadership Alliance, Youth Party, Zenith Labour Party, and National Rescue Movement, contested in only a limited number of areas.
Garba thanked political parties, election observers, civil society groups, security agencies and members of the media for their contributions to what he described as a peaceful electoral process. He also expressed appreciation to Governor Yahaya for providing an enabling environment for the conduct of the elections.
