Pope Pope Leo XIV has renewed his appeal for an immediate end to hostilities in the Middle East, urging global leaders to prioritise dialogue over military action in resolving ongoing tensions.

He made the call during a peace vigil held at St. Peter’s Basilica, where he delivered a strongly worded message against war and rising global violence.

The pontiff warned against continued reliance on force, saying that world leaders must shift their focus from military planning to negotiation and mediation. According to him, lasting peace can only be achieved through cooperation and meaningful engagement between opposing sides.

He also encouraged individuals and communities across the world to play their part in promoting peace by embracing forgiveness, understanding, and unity in their daily lives. He stressed that peacebuilding is not only the responsibility of governments but also of ordinary people.

Pope Leo criticised what he described as an increasing global tendency toward aggression and power struggles, noting that such attitudes deepen instability and human suffering. He expressed concern over the ongoing cycle of violence, saying it continues to claim lives and erode justice.

Since becoming pope in May following the death of his predecessor, Pope Leo XIV has maintained a reputation as a moderate leader within the Catholic Church. In recent months, he has become more vocal in addressing global conflicts, particularly the situation in the Middle East.

He reaffirmed his position that urgent diplomatic engagement is necessary to prevent further escalation, insisting that peace remains the only viable path toward stability in the region and beyond.
