Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has announced his intention to return to the National Assembly in 2027, aiming for a fifth consecutive term.
Abbas, who first entered the House in 2011, has since been re-elected in 2015, 2019, and 2023 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). His latest declaration was met with strong support from constituents and political allies during a well-attended event in his constituency.
The announcement drew large crowds of supporters, including youth groups, women associations, student bodies, and persons with disabilities. Many of them gathered at the Emir of Zazzau’s palace before moving in a procession to the official venue of the declaration.
The turnout caused significant congestion in parts of the area as residents came out in large numbers to show solidarity.
Abbas used the occasion to reflect on his legislative work and urged voters to maintain continuity in leadership.
He stressed that his experience in parliament positions him to better advocate for development projects, improved infrastructure, education funding, and economic opportunities for his constituency.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to addressing key challenges such as unemployment, insecurity affecting farming communities, and support for local businesses.
Prominent political figures, including Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and former Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, attended the event and publicly endorsed his re-election bid. They described him as a stable and effective lawmaker whose leadership has benefited both his constituency and the National Assembly.
Kalu noted that many lawmakers adjusted their schedules to honour the Speaker’s declaration, describing him as a respected figure within the legislature. Other supporters echoed similar sentiments, insisting that his continued presence in parliament would ensure ongoing development projects are completed.
Abbas also expressed appreciation for the support of President Bola Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, commending their leadership roles in national and state development efforts.
With his latest announcement, Abbas officially positions himself for another electoral contest in 2027, as political activities gradually build momentum ahead of the next general elections.
