Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured that preparations and campaigns for the 2027 general elections will not interfere with the legislative responsibilities of members of the National Assembly.
Akpabio gave the assurance on Saturday while speaking with journalists at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
He said lawmakers were elected to serve four-year terms and would remain committed to their constitutional duties even as political parties begin to intensify activities ahead of the elections.
According to him, lawmakers can effectively combine their political engagements with their responsibilities in the Senate and House of Representatives.
“We are elected for four years, and we are going to work for four years,” Akpabio said.
He explained that campaign activities could be scheduled around legislative work, with lawmakers attending to parliamentary duties during the day and participating in political engagements later.
Akpabio also noted that members belong to different political parties, meaning they would not all be required to campaign at the same time.
He insisted that the commencement of electioneering would not prevent the National Assembly from performing its core functions, including lawmaking and addressing issues affecting Nigerians.
The Senate President’s comments come amid increased political consultations and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Recently, Akpabio convened a meeting of All Progressives Congress stakeholders in the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District, where President Bola Tinubu, Akpabio and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno received endorsements for the 2027 elections.
With political parties and potential candidates already stepping up preparations for the polls, concerns have emerged over whether the growing political activities could affect government operations.
Akpabio, however, maintained that lawmakers were capable of maintaining a balance between their political ambitions and the responsibilities entrusted to them by Nigerians.
